Places that deserve to be discovered
Thanks to its rich cultural heritage and holiday destinations, Friuli Venezia Giulia is a beautiful surprise for tourists who decide to visit this region for the first time, far from the usual tourist summer routes. A crossroads of different Mediterranean cultures from northern Europe and the Balkans, Friuli Venezia Giulia is at the border with Austria and Slovenia. Its territory is not vast, yet it offers a diverse landscape: valleys and high mountains (the Alps), a coast washed by the Adriatic Sea, cities of art such as Trieste and Aquileia, rivers and charming small towns. The region is also famous for its enogastronomic specialities, such as San Daniele ham and excellent wine, such as Ramandolo, Refosco and Friulano (Tocai), and of course grappa.
What to do
In Trieste, an important Mediterranean port, we suggest spending a few hours walking around the city, in Piazza Unità d'Italia and visiting San Giusto Hill and the castles. In the heart of the region, in Udine, Piazza della Libertà is definitely a must-see. From there you can reach the famous castle and the Torre dell'Orologio (Clock Tower). Along the streets of the joyful town of Aquileia visitors can admire many traces of its historic past, in particular, the Roman ruins along the Via Sacra. Other sites worth visiting include the Basilica, the local museums and of course Grado Island and the beaches of Lignano Sabbiadoro, which is also where high-quality camping sites and holiday villages are located.
