Umbria is Italy’s central region par excellence, as it is located between Tuscany and Marche, with no access to the sea. Also known as “the green heart of Italy”, Umbria enchants tourists with its amazing landscape, made of green hills and stunning views of Lake Trasimeno, dotted with old towns and churches. Its capital is Perugia, a city rich of history and art, with its historic centre perched on the top of a hill, that enjoys spectacular views of the Umbrian countryside.
Camping in Umbria for a relaxing holiday
The area around Lake Trasimeno, located within a very green natural park on the border with Tuscany, is among the most popular Umbrian destinations, appreciated by both Italian and foreign tourists. It includes historic towns, often with a view over the countryside, ideal for anyone looking for a holiday surrounded by nature, with the opportunity to discover the historic towns and their traditions. Many camping sites and holiday villages are near Lake Trasimeno and most of them are located near historic towns such as Passignano sul Trasimeno, Tuoro sul Trasimeno, Magione and Castiglione del Lago. The latter is a beautiful and unique town that can be visited easily from any accommodation in the area. On Lake Trasimeno, visitors can take a boat and explore its islands: Isola Polvese, Isola Maggiore and Isola Minore. Another green and fascinating area of the region is in the province of Terni, around the Cascate delle Marmore (Marmore's Falls), some of the highest natural falls in Europe.
Religious tourism and enogastronomy
Umbria is also the region of religious tourism. In particular, the historic town of Assisi and its Basilica of Saint Francis, which is visited by thousands of pilgrims every year, many of which follow the walking trail Cammino di Assisi (St Francis Way), along the Francigena Road. The Basilica of Saint Francis, is one of the main religious tourism destinations in Umbria, a region that has a great number of interesting churches from an artistic point of view. Switching from the sacred to the profane, Umbria is also renowned for its enogastronomy, in particular for its cured meats, which range from prosciutto to sausages, and dishes prepared with truffle.
