Extremadura: travel guides

Extremadura and its nature and historic cities

Extremadura is an autonomous community in central southern Spain bordered by Portugal. It is a very interesting region from a touristic point of view, especially for those who enjoy holidays in the outdoors and hiking, thanks to the Montfragüe Nature Reserve, making it a real nature paradise. The capital of Extremadura is Mérida, a city rich in Roman monuments and culture, just as the settlement towns of Cáceres and Badajoz.

Campsites in Extremadura

The lush nature and mild climate, with the influence of the Atlantic Ocean from the coast of Portugal, make Extremadura ideal for camping lovers, those seeking a quiet holiday amongst greenery or for hiking and bird watching, with Monfragüe and the Jerte Valley among the favourite spots for bird watchers. For those who prefer wine and gastronomic tourism, a visit to Extremadura demands a stop in the lowland areas for a taste of the Spanish ham jamón ibérico, which takes the local speciality name of Dehesa de Extremadura.

Mérida and the cities of Extremadura

Not only nature, but also the cities of art and culture are of interest for those wishing to visit Extremadura. In the capital Mérida, for example, you will discover an ancient and modern city at the same time, in which, on a stroll through the centre, you might come across a lively tapas bar and then, just around the corner, a historic building or an ancient Roman bridge. With a deserved place among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Mérida has splendid examples of Roman architecture, such as the impressive amphitheatre which still stages major events. Cáceres and Badajoz are also worth a good visit, the former for the typical towers of its historic centre and the latter for its many castles and villas.
